How I passed the CCIE

Sydney Lab Door

Slack… 18 months since my last blog post. Initially I had the excuse, or made the excuse that I was studying for the CCIE and no longer had the time to write any blog posts. Then about 6 months ago I finally passed the CCIE. I decided after that to take a break for a bit. Then maybe do a post to write up how I passed the CCIE – because I had changed so much between the 3rd and 4th attempt. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months – you get the idea. After being committed to something for so long it was good to take a break. Well now I’m back and what better way to start than with how I passed the CCIE.

CCIE R&S v5 Exam in Sydney

Earlier this month I made an attempt at the Cisco CCIE R&S v5 Exam in Sydney. This was my first attempt at the newer v5 format of the lab exam. Once again I stayed up the road at Hotel Urban as this is only a short walk from the Cisco offices and the rooms are quiet and pleasant.

I arrived at Cisco around 7.45am, and the reception area was closed, due to open around 8am. After about 5 minutes a Cisco employee swiped me into the waiting area. He was also there to make an attempt on the CCIE DC Exam, his first CCIE attempt of any path. After the usual sign in process we wished each other luck, packed away our belongings and headed into the lab room.

Quite a bit has changed in the lab room since I attempted the R&S v4 exam. The workstations now feature Dual Monitors, and the K120 Logitech keyboard and mouse have been replaced with a basic Dell workstation keyboard and mouse. For me the feel of the Dell keyboard is very similar to the K120, so I’m sticking with that at home for my continued studies.

OSPFv2 and OSPFv3 for CCIEv5 Lab Exam

OSPFv2 and OSPFv3 for CCIEv5 Lab Exam

I’m currently working towards the CCIE Routing and Switching Lab Exam version 5.0 and I’m following on from the Cisco provided blueprint. Below are a portion of OSPFv2 and OSPFv3 sub topics I’m currently studying that align with the Cisco blueprint. I’ve also linked to the relevant page in the documentation. This is the same documentation available to exam candidates in the exam.

I’m often trying to find where each of the topics from the CCIE R&S Blueprint is within the Cisco documentation (aka Cisco DocCD) so I can quickly find what I need in the Lab Exam, some topics are pretty straightforward and some take me a while to find. I’ll outline more topics as I work through the Blueprint. I also plan to add my own studynotes to go along with the official documentation. Let me know if you see any errors or omissions.

Next up, OSPFv2 and OSPFv3
